J. Cole, whose real name is Jermaine Lamarr Cole, was born in Germany to American parents. They moved to North Carolina when he was eight. He was fourteen when he got into rapping. His cousin helped him understand the basic rhythms and use of words. He was also inspired by the American rappers Eminem and Canibus. By the time Cole turned fifteen, he had filled notebooks with lyrics and each song told a different story. The only problem was that he did not have his own beats to record those songs. His mother solved the problem by buying him a beat machine. With this much needed impetus, he started recording and posting his songs on internet under the name ‘Therapist’. Encouraged by the response he was getting on the internet, he went to meet Jay-Z outside his office. He waited for three hours before he even caught a glimpse of the man and even then it proved to be fruitless as he was shunned.
J. Cole did not give up hope. He released his first mixtape in 2007, titled "The Come Up". He himself produced 14 of the 21 songs. While he was recording his second mixtape, Jay-Z heard one of his songs named "Lights Please". This song became the reason for Jay-Z to sign Cole to his new record label Roc Nation. In fact, Cole was the first artist to be signed to the label.

After signing with Roc Nation J. Cole went on to produce another mixtape which was released in 2009 under the title of "The Warm Up". It was appreciated by the critics and received great reviews. He featured on Beyond Race Magazine’s list of ‘50 Great Breakthrough Artists’ and XXL Magazine’s Top Ten Freshmen. Considering the success of his debut mixtape, J. Cole was given the award of the ‘UMA Male Artist of the Year’. He was given the fifth position on Vibe’s Greatest Rappers Alive 30 Under 30. Moreover, 2011 BET Awards nominated him in the category of ‘Best New Artist’.

J. Cole released the first song of his debut studio album "Who Dat" in March 2010. The follow-up song of the album was "Work Out". His debut album itself was released later. Meanwhile, his third mixtape was released later in the year. It was called "Friday Night Lights" and was based on the hip hop genre of music. Majority of the production of the mixtape was done by Cole himself. It received some of the highest ratings. Finally, he released his debut album in September 2011. The album is titled "Cole World: The Sideline Story". Cole became the fourteenth solo male to have his debut album reach number one position on Billboard 200. It also gained the top position on US R&B and US Rap charts. It peaked at fourth position in Canada and at twenty-fifth in the UK.

To promote his albums and songs, Cole has been going on extensive tours. He toured colleges and universities in the USA from March 2007 to April 2010. His last concert on the tour was a part of the annual Rutgersfest hosted by the Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. He supported Drake on his UK tour called the ‘Light Dreams and Nightmares UK Tour’. He was also the opening performer on the Caribbean and North American part of Rihanna’s Loud Tour this year. It began in Baltimore and ended in Barbados. While on the tour, Rihanna declared him to be the official opening act and chief warm-up performer of the tour. The upcoming ventures of J. Cole include being the supporting act of Tinie Tempah’s 7-city Arena Tour in November 2011 which will stretch from Liverpool to Cardiff in the UK.

His fan base is ever growing. His music contains soulful rhythms and drum beats that are full of life and at the same time raw in their intensity. Rapp lovers flock to his concerts.
