Hailing from Glasgow, Scotland, Franz Ferdinand was formed in 2002. The band currently comprises of members, Alex Kapranos, Nick McCarthy, Robert Hardy and Paul Thomson. Before creating the band, all of its members had performed and worked with groups such as Yummy Fur, the Karelia, Embryo and 10p Invaders. Two of Franz Ferdinand’s members, Kapranos and Thomson became acquainted at a party where they happened to discuss music. With a common sense of music style the two started jamming and performing almost immediately. They were soon joined by Nick McCarthy who had recently returned from Germany after completing his study of jazz bass. Together the three musicians started composing music along with sound engineer, Michael Parker. They were soon joined by the group’s fourth member, Robert Hardy and with that the lineup of the newly formed ensemble was complete.
A year later, Franz Ferdinand was seen signing with Domino Records, an independent label. They released an EP in the same year. Titled "Darts of Pleasure" the release was able to win the band the 2004 NME "Phillip Hall Radar Award". The album was also ranked amongst the top 50 albums on UK Albums Chart. With the success of the EP, the group was seen relocating to Malmo to work at the Gula Studio for their first full-length album. In January 2004, Franz Ferdinand released a single from this album titled "Take Me Out".
The single took the indie rock world by storm and the track reached to the third spot on the UK Singles Chart. A month later, the band came forth with its self-titled debut album which saw similar success. Landing on the third spot of the UK Albums Chart, Franz Ferdinand was also able to land on number twelve on the Australian Albums Chart. If this wasn’t enough it was also placed amongst the top five records on the US Heatseekers Chart. The debut record has been able to sell over one million copies throughout the US, achieving platinum certification. Most critic publications and institutions praised the album, stating Franz Ferdinand as being the greatest art school rock groups similar to The Who, the Beatles, Sex Pistols, the Rolling Stones, Blur, Travis and Wire.
A follow-up album was recorded in Glasgow and released in 2005. Named "You Could Have It So Much Better", the record was well received by the public and critics alike. It debuted on top of the UK Albums Chart and at the eighth place on the US Albums Chart. Their promotional tours were even bigger successes as the band was able to perform at the Alexandra Palace in North London for four nights in a row. All of these shows were completely sold out. Taking some time off from recording, the indie rock group performed ceaselessly till 2008, after which the members became busy with composing new material.
Their third album was released in 2009. Named "Tonight: Franz Ferdinand", the album was mixed by Mike Fraser. Singles such as "Ulysses", "No You Girls", "Can’t Stop Feeling" and "What She Came For" achieved massive success and made their way to charts namely US Modern Rock, US Billboard 100 and UK Top 40. Their most recent release was their fourth studio album titled "Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Actions" that came out in 2013. Songs such as "Right Action" and "Love Illumination" have become international hits and the record has received a third out of five star rating by Alternative Press.
