A progressive metal group, Dream Theater has been performing since 1985 under Majesty. The members of the band include John Petrucci, in addition to Mike Portno and John Myung. They formed this band when they were still studying in Massachusetts. In order to pursue a career in the world of music, they stopped attending school and focused all their energies in music. The band has been through various stages. Various members joined and left it. However, the 3 original members stayed together for years with Jordan Rudess in addition to James LaBrie. After 2010, Portnoy also quit the group. The same year, Mike Mangini replaced the old drummer and became a permanent drummer for Dream Theater.

The band is into progressive metal music style which is a popular subgenre of heavy metal. High Tide was the band that pioneered this genre of music. King Crimson and Rush also used the same music style. Dream Theater took the style of these progressive rock groups and came up with its own style.

Dream Theater is popular for its technical knack of its instrumentalists other than its powerful music and lyrics. Because of its technical knowhow of music, it has got a number of awards as well. John Petrucci, the guitarist, has the honor of being the 3rd player on the G3 tour as many as 6 times. He was named in Joel McIver’s "The 100 Greatest Metal Guitarists" as the number two best metal guitarist. Not only this, GuitarOne magazine named him as one of the "Top 10 Greatest Guitar Shredders of All Time". Mike Portnoy, the former drummer of the band, got many awards from the magazine Modern Drummer. He also has the honor of being the 2nd youngest individual to become a part of the Rock Drummer Hall of Fame. Mike Mangini, the drummer who replaced him in 2010, also set several WFD records.

Dream Theater released its album Images and Words in 1992. It became the most selling compilation by this music sensation and got number sixty one rank on the Billboard 200 chart. Awake was released in 1994 while Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence was made public in 2002. A number of hits were produced by these albums which continued to entertain the fans of this band in a fantastic manner. In the United States, the band has sold more than 2.1 million albums; it has sold more than ten million albums around the world. A Dramatic Turn of Events was made public in 2011 and made its way to U.S. Billboard 200 at number 8 position.
