Background

Bruno Mars is the stage name taken up by Peter Gene Hernandez, a music producer, songwriter and singer who was born on October 8, 1985 at Honolulu, Hawaii. Belonging to a gifted family, he developed a keen interest in music quite early in his childhood. His father gave him the nickname Bruno for his resemblance with a chubby wrestler Bruno Sammartino, a name that became his identity later. 

After graduating from President Theodore Roosevelt High School in 2003, Mars decided to pursue a career in music and moved to Los Angeles, California. It was at that time that he adapted his stage name of Bruno Mars with Bruno coming from his childhood nickname and Mars according to him was taken up because, as he quotes it, girls told him that he belonged somewhere out of this world. 

Beginnings

Mars initially signed to Motown Records, but could not succeed in gaining much recognition. Soon, he decided to make his own songs in collaboration with an engineer Ari Levine and a song writer Philip Lawrence, making a production team named The Smeezingtons. After some successful ventures, Lawrence introduced Bruno to Atlantic Records manager Bay-Schuck who was impressed with his work and showed interest in signing him. It was after signing to Atlantic Records in 2009 that Bruno finally found commercial success and the fame he was looking for.

Albums

By 2009 Bruno’s singing abilities were evident and recognized, especially after his performances in Travie McCoy’s Billionaire and Nothin on You by B.o.B. He released his first EP labeled It's Better If You Don’t Understand in May 2010 that won him more recognition, setting grounds for his subsequent studio album release dubbed Doo-Wops & Hooligans that was launched in October 2010. The studio album contained songs like Just the Way You Are and Grenade that received great response by the critics and reached the top of Billboard’s Hot 100. The record sold 55,000 copies in the US and was rated at number 3 on Billboard’s 200. For a debut album, it was a commendable success that set Bruno on a journey towards worldwide fame. In November of 2016, Bruno Mars released his third and latest record titled, 24K Magic and toured in support of it.      

Music Style

In general, Bruno’s music style can be categorized into genres of pop, R&B, soul and alternative hip hop, although his songs often involve a deviation from typical genre thus creating their own effect. This fact makes the artist more versatile as well as unique in his performance and this has earned him an identity different from the rest. Bruno’s has collaborated with different artists including Kesha and Flo Rida in “Right Round”, Cee Lo Green in “Fuck You!” and K’naan in “Wavin’ Flag.” Even while performing with these renowned artists, he has always endeavored to produce music in his very own different style.
