Avicii is one of the newer exponents of house and progressive house music. House music characteristically uses repetitive beats and drum machine rhythms, offbeat cymbals, and synthesized bass-lines. He was born as Tim Bergling in Stockholm, Sweden in 1989. He was initially inspired by the likes of Swedish House Mafia, Steve Angello, Daft Punk, and Eric Prydz. As a self-taught musician, he spent time on his bedroom keyboards and synths, and ran many music blogs to hone his inventive instincts. He met with Ash Pournouri, started a long-lasting and immensely fruitful creative partnership. He was soon signed to Pournouri’s "At Night" management agency, and his earliest contributions to music included "Lacy Lace", a remix of a theme song belonging to a Commodore 64 video game Lazy Jones. His blogs continued to whip up support for him, catching the eye of notable experts like Tiesto, who invited him to partake in a weekly residency at Privilege, Ibiza. In 2008, Avicii hit the jackpot, winning British DJ Pete Tong’s prestigious Fast Trax competition, earning glowing tributes from Tong amid pocketing a hefty 70% of the votes. Tong signed the teenager onto his Bedroom Bedlam imprint. That triggered the release of Avicii ’s first major release, "Manman". That same year, he ventured into remix territory, remixing Phonat’s "Set Me Free".
Avicii initially hit the airwaves with the success of his remixes in 2009. Remixed artists included Tiesto, David Guetta, Dizzie Rascal, and Little Boots. In 2010, "Seek Bromance", a Ministry of Sound instrumental, became his first released single. It topped charts in Belgium, went #2 in Netherlands, and hit #5 in Denmark apart from further top 20 finishes in Sweden, Switzerland, and UK, where the slow-burning success peaked with the vocal version featuring Amanda Wilson’s vocals. The single notched up Gold certifications in Australia, Belgium, and Denmark, and reached #1 Beatport status. His second single of the year was "My Feelings for You", where he collaborated with Sebastian Drums. It also reached #1 Beatport status, remaining there for 5 weeks. On national charts, it hit a high of #24 in Netherlands, breaking into the top 40 in five nations. In the remix stakes, 2010 was uproariously successful. Tracks from artists like Junior Caldera, Enrique Iglesias, David Guetta (with Fergie and LMFAO), and Nadia Ali were morphed into sleek remixes. With his international profile rising, Avicii took on 2011 with the new single "Fade into Darkness" that went 2x Platinum in his native Sweden. It reached #4 in Sweden and #27 in Netherlands. His fourth single "Levels" topped charts in Hungary, Norway, and Sweden. Its unprecedented success saw it break into the top 10 in ten other countries. It went Platinum in Australia and Sweden, with Silver certification in UK. The other-worldly high-octane sound of "Levels" featured a vocal sample of the 1962 Etta James gospel hit "Something’s got a Hold on me". He remixed tracks for Armin Van Buuren, Daft Punk, and Coldplay, with three other charting songs and a #1 US Dance hit with Leona Lewis ("Collide"). In 2012, he has remixed for Madonna and Lenny Kravitz , and his debut album The Battery Pack is set to be released.
Avicii ’s thumping music has appealed to fans live in concert. His largest crowd is the Electric Daisy Festival 2011 Las Vegas crowd, but he played in 2011 across North America, Dominican Republic, and European hotspots like Monaco, Toulouse, Ibiza, Hradec Kralove, and Nuremberg. He expanded this list to include Taiwan, Singapore, South Africa, Australia, and Mexico in 2012. Upcoming American dates see him at Bridgeport, Kingston, and Amherst.
Avicii ’s unerring command over his synth beats has earmarked him as the future of house music. The clamor for Avicii tickets is reaching deafening proportions as the American tour goes into overdrive.
