One of the best emerging artists in the world of American hip hop and R&B music today is August Alsina. He has released a number of sensational songs. These were released in 2014 as part of the very successful album, Testimony, which featured the likes of Jeezy. August Alsina is one of the most talked about artists in the American R&B and hip hop scene. Hailing from New Orleans, the singer and songwriter has been active since 2007. He is presently signed onto Def Jam Records and was previously signed onto Radio Killa. Alsina has been associated with the likes of Rich Homie Quan, Pusha T and Yo Gotti, amongst others in the American R&B industry. August Alsina rose to fame with the song I Luv This Shit, which he recorded with Trinidad James. His debut album was released in 2014 to much fanfare. Born in New Orleans, Alsina was inspired to take on a career in music by Sister Act 2's Lauryn Hill. In 2007, at the age of fourteen, he began uploading videos of song covers by the likes of Lyfe Jennings.
Alsina and his mother moved to Houston, Texas following the devastating Hurrican Katrina in 2005, for a fresh start. In 2010, his older brother was shot and passed away, leading to Alsina getting even more committed to music. In 2011, he moved to Atlanta.
August Alsina's first mixtape, The Product, was released in 2012. In 2013, a year later, he released the song I Luv This Shit, which featured Trinidad James. I Luv This Shit, ranked fourth on the Hot R&B Songs chart and was also certified gold by the RIAA.
It was followed by a second mixtape, aptly titled The Product 2. He also released an EP later that year, titled Downtown: Life Under the Gun. A music video for one of its songs, Hell on Earth, was also released. A second single from the album, Ghetto, which featured Rich Homie Quan, received a lot airplay on urban contemporary radio stations across the country. The song also became the most added song on urban radio, making Alsina and his music all the more popular.
In 2014, Alsina released the first single from his debut album. Titled Make It Home, the track also featured Jeezy. The album itself, titled Testimony, was released later on to much critical and commercial acclaim.
Alsina's debut studio album ranked second on the Billboard 200 charts, first on the Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums chart, first on the Top R&B Albums chart and tenth on the UK R&B Chart. It also charted on the UK Albums Chart. Alsina's EP also similarly charted on the Billboard 200, Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums and Top R&B Albums charts.
Aside from The Product mixtapes, Alsina has also released other mixtapes including an untitled EP, August Alsina University and Throwback.
Alsina has also released a number of music videos on his songs. In 2013, he released music videos for Ghetto, I Luv This Shit and Numb. In 2014, he released videos for Make It Home, Benediction and Get Ya Money.
Alsina has also received a number of awards and award nominations, including two BET Awards. He won for Best New Artist and Coca–Cola Viewers' Choice Award categories. He also received two more BET Award nominations in the Best Male R&B/Pop Artist and Best Collaboration categories.
