About Metropolitan Opera Rigoletto

Rigoletto is an opera show that has been divided into three different parts. Created by Giuseppe Verdi, this opera’s libretto was first written by Francesco Maria Piave in Italian. It has been based on the theatrical production by Victor Hugo titled as Le roi s’amuse. On the 11th of March in 1851 the first performance of the opera took place at La Fenice in Venice. Regardless of the major problems the opera had to face with the censors of Austria who basically had the entire charge of the northern Italian theatres during that that time, this opera still managed to have a great successful premiere. The opera is rendered to be amongst the first operatic work of genius by Verdi that came out in the middle of his career.

The story of the Rigoletto revolves around the rather profligate Duke of Mantua and his Rigoletto who is a hunch backed court jester and his gorgeous daughter named Gilda. The initial title of the opera was called La maledizione which means “The Curse”, this is a reference to the curse that was put on the Duke as well as Rigoletto by one of the courtier’s whose daughter had been regrettably been a subject of seduction by the immoral Duke and that had occurred because of the motivation that he had received from Rigoletto. The curse finally comes to its culmination when Gilda falls in love with the Duke. She gives up her life to save the Duke from the killers that have been hired by her father.
