Garanca was brought up by a musical family, who nourished and supported her musical side from the very beginning. Her father was a choral director while her mother a professor of music at prestigious institutes of the country and also a lieder singer. Both encouraged her to follow her heart. Garanca went to the Latvian Academy of Music for formal training in singing, she trained here with Sergej Martinov. Later she polished her vocals under the training of Irina Gavrilovic in Austria. She came to the United States and worked with Virginia Zeani to further perfect her voice and singing.
She joined Südthüringisches Staatstheater, Meiningen and the Frankfurt Opera in the earlier part of her career. Her most important achievement in her early years was the sweep at the Mirjam Helin Singing Competition in Helsinki. It gave her more opportunities to sing and perform live all over Europe. She got an international breakthrough in 2003, when she sang under conductor Nikolaus Harnoncourt. The Salzburger Festspiele saw her sing Annio (a production of Mozart's La clemenza di Tito); here she got huge appreciation for her vocal strength and confidence.
In 2004, this mezzo performed in a number of operas at the Vienna State opera. Werther’s Charlotte and Così fan tutte’s Dorabella took her to Paris in 2005. She came back to La clemenza di Tito and worked with them for three years before joining the MET opera in 2008. This was her company debut where she became a part of Rossini's Il barbiere di Siviglia. Here she sung as Rosina and impressed critics and public with her technique and appeal. Media praised her as the best and the most competent mezzo soprano to join the world of opera. She made a mark with her speed, clarity, articulation and lightness in delivery. As a mezzo she did wonders to the show; she carried it smoothly from the start to the end making it a wonderful experience for everyone watching it.
