The New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players The Mikado is the re-incarnation of this epic opera. The New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players is a theater company formed in the year 1974 by Albert Bergeret with some friends who were all alumni’s of the famous Barnard College Gilbert & Sullivan Society. They started off playing some scenes from the likes of The Mikado and The Pirates of Penzance at small occasions. Slowly but surely more new faces began to join the ranks and the horizons of the company began to expand. Their first appearance in front of the general public came on 14th July, 1974 when they performed at a street fair.
Their first indoor home turned out to be the B’nai Jeshurun Community Center. It was a step forward in the right direction and Bergeret took over the duties of not only designing the sets but also went to become the music director. It was at the start of the year 1976 that the organization started to showcase its repertoire on Sundays. No other days of the week were available because the facility was used by the New York School of Opera. They spent the first few weeks performing Trial by Jury and H.M.S Pinafore. Those shows received a lot of appreciation and that encouraged the New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players to work on new productions. The first of which was The Pirates of Penzance and it made its debut on 29th February, 1976.
They followed that up by increasing their repertoire to four plays in the latter part of the same year. Lolanthe, Pirates, Pinafore and The Mikado were the operas added on the portfolio and that enabled the organization to really take off. Fans began to pack their shows and as 1977 rolled into town they moved to the Symphony Space. The new place had a seating capacity of seven hundred and that made it possible for the company to perform at a bigger audience than before.
With Bergeret at the top, the NYGASP brought on board their first orchestra consisting of twenty five pieces. That was a big step in turning the organization into a professional one. Patience made its sensational debut as part of NYGASP’s repertoire in 1981. On top of that to further increase the profile of the company a lot of guest stars were also passed invitations to take part in the proceedings. The iconic John Reed started his six years long association with the company in 1984 and that further increased the stature of NYGASP as it began to attract a lot of other famous artists to the organization. The excellence has kept on coming in the form of exceptional plays to this very day.
The company has grown from strength to strength since then. The productions have been a perfect tribute to the incredible talents and works of Gilbert and Sullivan. NYGASP has made sure that the work of these two greats isn’t just confined to the history books.
