The musical If/Then is directed by Michael Greif. Tom Kitt worked on the theatrical score whereas Brian Yorkey worked on the libretto. The brilliant choreography is done by Larry Keigwin, the exotic set designs by Mark Wendland, the amazing costumes by Emily Rebholz and the dazzling lighting by Kenneth Posner. The musical was presented for the tryout in 2013 at the National Theatre. Mark did a tremendous job with the set designs. It opened with wide mirror angles projected overhead. In order to depict parts of the city being build, sleek wooden frames were put to place with warm light to build the ambiance.
The show stars Idina Menzel as Elizabeth the lead character, James Snyder as Josh, LaChanze as Kate and Anthony Rapp as Lucas. Other characters included Jason Tam, Jenn Colella, Tamika Sonja Lawrence and Jerry Dixon. The story of the musical revolves around the life of Elizabeth. Elizabeth holds a PhD in city planning and is married to her grad school class fellow. The couple moves to Phoenix after their marriage. In her late thirties, she realizes that her life comprises of unfulfilled career dreams and her marriage is loveless and childless. She takes the decision to pursue her dream of shaping up the New York City and leave this dull boring life behind. In the city, Elizabeth makes new friends; Kate - a kindergarten teacher and Lucas - a community organizer. Kate suggests Elizabeth to have new experiences under the nickname “Liz” whereas Lucas suggests her to make professional connections in the city using her college nickname “Beth”. The character splits into two parts, “Liz” remains with Kate in the park whereas “Beth” leaves with Lucas. The rest of the show features the two paths that Elizabeth’s life could have taken. The musical includes popular soundtracks such as "If I Told You / If", "Ain't No Man Manhattan", "You Never Know", "Surprise", "The First of Forever", "Some Other Me", "I Love You / I Hate You", "Starting Over", "What Would You Do?" and many more. The score of Tom Kitts depicts contemporary musical style of rock, country and pop themes. The themes are accompanied by the compact ensemble of harmonies and soaring melodies. The live tune of “Ain’t No Manhattan” highlights the act one of the musical and consists of smart lyrics by Yorkey. The soothing voice of Snyder is experienced in “Here I Go”, a duet with Menzel. Other country influenced tunes along with “Here I Go” features LaChanze and Colella who doubled the impact of music with “No More Wasted Time.”
