About Clue The Musical

Clue The Musical is based on the famous board game clue. In 1997 it started off as an Off-Broadway production. Off-Broadway plays and revues are always staged at small theaters that usually have a capacity to seat up to 500 fans. These theaters are located in New York and some popular theaters in this category are Snapple Theater and Laura Pels Theater. Many off-Broadway plays got popular and went on to be staged on Broadway, some of these include Rock of Ages, In the Heights, Sunday in the Park with George, A Chorus Line, The Normal Heart, I Am My own Wife, The 25th  Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee and Grey Gardens.
The initial tryouts of Clue The Musical were done in 1995 and 1996 in Baltimore at New Boston Street Dinner Theater in Baltimore and in Chicago at Organic Thetaer respectively. The book for the play was written by Peter DePietro and the lyrics were written Tom Chiodo. The music has been composed by Galen Blum, Wayne Barker and Vinnie Martucci. Clue The Musical is a 2 Act play that opened at the famous Players Theater in 1997. It was closed after 17 previews and 29 performances. DePietro directed all these performances.
The play is about a board game show that is being hosted by a mysterious anchor named Mr Boddy. He invites audience to come and play this game and gives them cards, weapons and clues. By the end of Act 1 Mr. Boddy is found dead. In the second act a detective comes in who solves the mystery and finally catches the murderer. Main characters in the play are Mr. Boddy (the host and murder victim), detective, Colonel Mustard (he was married to Mr. Boddy’s mother and is a murder suspect), Mr. Green (partner of Boddy and a con artist), Mrs. Peacock (a black widow and entrepreneur who is suspected to have killed five of her previous husbands), Professor Plum (a genius person whose fortunes were destroyed by Mr Boddy), Miss Scarlet (shrewd lover of Mr. Green and an ex-dancer), Mrs. White and Piano Player.
The music of the play is really nice and includes tracks songs like “The Game,” “Life is a Bowl of Pits,” “Do Unto Your Enemies,” “Everyday Devices,” “Once a Widow,” “After The Murder,” “She Hasn’t Got a Clue,” “Seduction Deduction,” “Don’t Blame Me,” “The Final Clue,” “Foul-Weather Friend” and “Once a Widow.” One critic appreciated the flat art-deco backdrops on stage that looked similar to a board game and looked perfect for this musical. The musical band of cellist did a great job and can be termed as one of the highlights of it. At some point it also seems that the music gives a much more powerful impact then the acting and diction of the characters. Daily News however gave it a negative review commenting that “the play was excruciatingly unfunny.”
Clue The Musical has a very exciting ending that stuns the audience. The play is a blend of good script, nice music and fine acting. If you want to watch an unusual musical then this is one play that you can’t afford to miss.
