At first we meet Jennyanydots (The Old Gumbie Cat) who appears to be resting all day and in the night gets up only to teach different insects like cockroaches and mice. She is at once interrupted by Rum Tum Tugger who is a tom cat with an appearance of a leopard with black spots and has an unpleasant personality. Suddenly an old grey cat called Grizabella comes into the limelight and the whole atmosphere becomes grim but as soon as it leaves the ambiance is again cheerful ,when Bustopher Jones enters. Suddenly there is chaos on the stage as all cats start running here and there when two mischievous cats named Rumpelteazer and Mungojerrie arrive on the stage.
 
Then we are introduced to Old Deuteronomy who is a very old cat and has lived many lives. This old cat is responsible for giving another life to a cat on the Heaviside Layer. Along with Gus, Jellylorum, Skimbleshanks, Bombalurina and Demeter we meet the most criminal of all cats called Macavity. He becomes successful in capturing Old Deuteronomy who was considered to be extremely powerful. All the cats become sad and ponder over the solution of this problem. At this time Rum Tum Tugger suggests that they should call Mr. Mistoffelees who is capable of performing magic that no other cat can think of. With his help they are able to find Old Deuteronomy and all the cats join hands and chase Macavity away. In the end we see that due to Grizabella’s appearance and present condition she is the one who will be taken to the Heaviside Layer.
