The musical is based on the play, ‘I Am A Camera’, by John Van Druten that was first staged in 1951. John’s play was inspired from Christopher Isherwood’s 1939 novel, ‘Goodbye to Berlin’. The original production of Cabaret the musical was based on the book by Joe Masteroff. The lyrics and music of the show were provided by Fred Ebb and John Kander respectively. After twenty one previews, the musical debuted on Broadway at the Broadhurst Theatre in November 1966. The original production was choreographed by Ron Field and directed by Harold Prince. The show was an instant hit amongst the audience as well as the critics. It managed to bag several prestigious awards and accolades including eight Tony Awards
for the ‘Best Costume Design’, ‘Best Choreography’, ‘Best Direction’, ‘Best Original Score’ and ‘Best Musical’ amongst others. The original production ran for over a thousand performances.
The success of the musical led to the West End premiere of Cabaret at the Palace Theatre. With Peter Sallis, Lila Kedrova, Barry Dennen and Judi Dench as the main cast, the show completed over three hundred performances. Since then, the musical has been staged around the world and has been revived several times on Broadway and West End, London stages. The show has been staged in Brazil, Argentina, Portugal and Spain amongst other destinations. The 1998 Broadway Revival of the show bagged three Drama Desk Awards
and four Tony Awards
