Cirque Du Soleil The 30th Anniversary Concert
Perched on stilts, Guy Laliberté and Daniel Gauthier enjoyed appreciation at a local fair in Baie-Saint-Paul, a small town in Québec City. Mixing with the crowd, the duo entertained tourists and locals with their juggling, fire breathing acts and music. Two years later they were invited to perform at a public event celebrating the 450th anniversary of Jacques Cartier’s discovery of Canada. This time Laliberté and Gauthier decided to go in fully prepared. They developed a unique concept and pitched Cirque du Soleil to the organizers. Since then there has been no looking back for them. Mixing circus art with theatrics and no animals – this was what that set it apart from the usual circus.
Focusing entirely on human spectacles such as stilt-walkers, fire-eaters, jugglers and acrobats, the troupe gained a following all over Canada. Eventually their popularity spread across North America and today, Cirque du Soleil has become a globetrotting organization. Strongly believing in the power of creativity and art, the company designs shows with an intention to touch the audience, so that they always take home a memory – be it a character, an act or a song. Till date Cirque du Soleil has come up with 35 different shows, each having a new concept, fresh music and innovative acts. In The 30th Anniversary Concert, music from all these shows will be featured, presented in a never before style. Slated to be 75 minutes event, it will bring to stage 8 vocalists, 70-member choir and 28 musicians. Calling it company’s Christmas present to the people of Montreal, the anniversary concert will have Guy Laliberté and Jean-François Bouchard as the artistic guides. Alain Vinet, who has been associated with many hit Cirque’s shows, will serve as the musical director for this one-time show. No Cirque du Soleil show is complete with an exotic stage design and for this installment Véronique Dussault will be the event designer.
