Arguably the most engaging musical of the decade, Wicked has seen its fanfare increase by the minute. Based on Gregory Maguire’s 1939 novel Wicked, it has grown as much due to its references to the immortal Wizard of Oz film as it has due to the lovable cast of characters.
Set in the Land of Oz before Dorothy’s arrival, Wicked takes us through the rocky relationship between Elphaba, an emerald-green skinned smart impulsive girl, & Glinda, the pretty & ambitious witch. The intricacies of their polar opposite responses to issues such as the wizard’s deplorable corruption & their common love interest shape how the latter ends up becoming the Good Witch of the North, while the former is shunned to become the spiteful Wicked Witch of the West.
Wicked is based on Emmy-winner Winnie Holzman’s book, with music & lyrics by Stephen Schwartz. Joe Mantello was director of Wicked’s first showing, at San Francisco’s Curran Theater in May 2003, going to Broadway’s Gershwin Theater five months later.
Originally receiving mixed reviews, Wicked’s inimitable charm, popular storyline & stunning lead performances have enhanced its standing. Wicked is proud winner of three 2004 Tony Awards, an Olivier & a Grammy.
Wicked has been running with great success on Broadway & West-End (since 2006). A veteran of two National Tours, & tours to Australia, Japan & Europe, Wicked comes to Saskatoon’s TCU Place as part of its Canadian tour, as Wicked Saskatoon tickets are getting hot on the tickets market.
