The musical masterpiece of the dynamic duo of lyricist Stephen Schwartz and screenwriter Winnie Holzman’s, Wicked comes to Eugene. The musical is based on the novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, written by Gregory Maguire.
The plot unfolds from the perspective of Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, who feels alienated from the rest of the society, due to the way she looks. Glinda, is the other main character, who is the Good Witch of the North. The two are friends despite having totally different personalities. The story develops as the two opposite personalities interact, in terms of having the same love-interest, their opinions regarding the corrupt government of Wizard, and eventually with Elphaba’s demise.
This brilliantly written musical is a masterpiece of Winnie Holzman, who is an American dramatist, screenwriter and poet. The gifted writer broke into the world of Broadway in 2003, when she wrote for Stephen Schwartz’s musical Wicked.
Despite receiving mixed reviews from theatre critics in the beginning, the musical became a record-breaking success at the box office. In the Audience Award for Most Popular Show category, it won the prestigious Laurence Olivier Awards in 2010, amongst many more. Wicked is the 17th longest running show in the history of Broadway. Till February 2011, 3,070, of its performances had been staged and that too with great success.
