How the story goes
Helen Edmundson’s stage adaptation of Emile Zola’s classic novel relates the story of Therese, a quiet young woman with a restless spirit who has made peace with a loveless life alongside her selfish and weak husband, Camille. Things change when she meets his childhood friend, Laurent. Overwhelmed by passion, the two embark on an illicit affair that has murderous consequences, as they realize that love can be a dangerous game, and sometimes there is no winner.
Another promising production by the Roundabout Theater Company
Therese Raquin has been commissioned for Broadway by the popular Roundabout Theater Company as part of their fiftieth-anniversary season. Roundabout is a leading name in the world of theater with a specialty in producing classic works and reviving plays and musicals often neglected by other commercial producers. Over the years, the company has been recognized with nearly thirty Tony Awards as well as forty-two Drama Desk Awards and various other prestigious awards. In the past, it has attracted such famous actors as Liam Neeson, Alan Cumming, Christopher Plummer, Nathan Lane and many more as well as some popular directors. Therese Raquin is being directed by Evan Cabnet known on the Broadway circuit for the romantic comedy, The Performers.
Keira Knightley makes her Broadway debut
One of the biggest names in the entertainment world is the Academy Award and Golden Globe nominated actress Keira Knightley, who rose to fame courtesy of her role in movies like Pirates of the Caribbean, Atonement and more recently, The Imitation Game. Knightley will be making her Broadway debut in the title role of Therese Raquin starring as a woman who sets out on an adulterous affair. Though it’s her debut at the Great White Way, Keira is not new to the stage or to classics. She has appeared in West End’s productions of “The Children’s Hour” and “The Misanthrope,” among others.
A star-studded cast
Starring alongside Knightley as Therese’s cuckolded husband Camille is the Tony Award winner Gabriel Ebert. The cast also features another Tony Award winner Judith Light portraying Therese’s meddlesome mother-in-law. Matt Ryan, the West End veteran and Constantine actor, stars as the hunky outsider Laurent. Some other cast members include David Patrick Kelly, Mary Wiseman, Sara Topham, Jeff Still, and more.
