The world premiere of the play was conducted at the San Francisco Theatre Union in 1937. The successful performances led the production to Broadway where it premiered at the Music Box Theatre in November 1937. After two hundred and seven performances, the show closed in May 1938. The original production was directed by George S. Kaufman and starred Wallace Ford and Broderick Crawford as George and Lennie respectively. Following the Broadway stint, the show moved to Los Angeles where the character of Lennie was played by Lon Chaney, Jr. whereas the character of George was still played by Wallace.
