“Newsies has enormous magnetism!” is how the New York Magazine reviewed Newsies The Musical. The musical is inspired by the 1992 hit Disney movie of the same name. It is based on the real-life Strike of the Newsboys that took place in 1899. The book for the musical is written by Harvey Fierstein while the lyrics are provided by Jack Feldman. Alan Menken scores the music with choreography by Christopher Gattelli. Feldman and Menken won the ‘Best Original Score’ award at the Tony Awards and Gattelli nabbed the ‘Best Choreography’ trophy.

The story follows the struggles faced by the leader of the Newsies, Jack Kelly. He and his boys buy the newspaper daily from New York World to sell them on the streets of NYC. But when the publisher Joseph Pulitzer decides to up the price at the newsies’ expense, Kelly stands up against it.


During a well-publicized strike, he gets smitten by the beautiful journalist, Katherine. In order to end the strike because of the police and the strikebreakers’ pressure, Kelly has to decide between being loyal to his boys or cut the deal with the publisher; all amidst his budding romance with Katherine.


Newsies The Musical is now touring across major venues in Canada and the US. The touring cast includes seasoned actors like Steve Blanchard, Angela Grovey, Dan DeLuca, Stephanie Styles, Zachary Sayle and Jacob Kemp among others.
