Matilda The Musical
Matilda the Musical received immense praise from wherever it was shown since its premier. It also gained great popularity on the box office. In 2011, Matilda earned the Theatre Awards UK and Ned Sherrin Award in the category of “Best Musical”. The Musical was honored with seven Olivier Awards in 2012 that included the category of “Best New Musical”, “Best Actor in a Musical –Carvel”, “Best Theatre Choreographer-Darling”, “Best Actress in a Musical-all four Matildas”, “Best Sound Design-Baker”, “Best Director-Warchus” and “Best Set Design-Howell”. Based on the writings of the renowned writer Roald Dahl, Matilda the Musical is a stage performance depicting dance, dialogue, songs and acting. The stage musical was written by Dennis Kelly whereas the musical compositions and lyrics were contributed by Tim Minchin. Director Matthew Warchus produced the show with designs by Rob Howell. The choreography was done by Peter Darling whereas the lighting, sound and specials effects were done by Hugh Vanstone, Simon Baker and Paul Kieve respectively. After successfully completing the trial run for twelve weeks at the ‘Stratford-upon-Avon’ staged by the Royal Shakespeare Company, the musical featured its West End premier in Nov 2011. The debut performance opened with positive reviews at the London's Cambridge Theatre with notable performances by Kaye and Carvel. The show was transferred to Broadway in 2013 with a production cost of sixteen million US dollars. Numerous changes were made to adapt the show according to the American audiences. The performance was opened with Sophia Gennusa in the lead role.

As per the review in The Independent, "The Royal Shakespeare Company has struck gold with this wildly entertaining musical”. The London performances brought along a positive set of reviews, Julie carpenter appreciated the performance with all five stars and referred to the musical as "gloriously over the top" in her review of the Daily Express. The Broadway transfer of the play was awarded with the highest marks by the New York Critics. According to the review in Chicago Tribune, the musical was categorized as the Best Family Musical in Years. Time Magazine compared Matilda to be of the same successful standard as set by the musical of Lion King. New York Post rebuilds faith in the Broadway by calling Matilda the Musical as a major contributor in doing so.
