Collegiate Rugby Championship was founded in 2010. Initially it was known as Collegiate Championship Invitational. The first ever tournament was held in the city of Columbus in Ohio. The venue for the event was the very spacious Columbus Crew Stadium. Located on 1 Black and Gold Boulevard in Columbus this venue is primarily famous for hosting soccer games. It can seat up to 25000 fans. Since then the venue has shifted to the PPL Park situated on 1 Stadium Drive in Chester Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
 Over a couple of years the event has managed to get the attention of not just major TV and radio channels but also corporate sponsors. The event is now sponsored by companies like Toyota, Subway and Geico. The official media channels are NBC Sports Network. In 2011 the average attendance at the championship was 17000 followed by 18000 in 2012. The game format is such that 16 teams are divided in four pools of four teams.
