If you have been waiting for a time in life when you can experience spiritualty then your prayers have been answered. Mercyme is all set to inspire you. Mercyme is an American based contemporary Christian band that was formed in the year 1994.The bands lead singer Bart Millard, wanted to become a football player in the beginning but after he got injured in a high school football match he decided to take choir as an elective. After the death of his father he was invited by his youth pastor, who had moved to Florida, to join a youth group’s worship band. Millard accepted the invitation and started working on the sound systems and videos for the group. It all started when once the bands main singer could not perform on stage and Bart jumped to rescue. At that time he decided to sing for the group which later on became a norm. James (Jim) Bryson played piano and he went on to playing for the worship band on a trip to Switzerland. It was then, that Bryson and Millard decided to take music seriously. Millard and his guitarist friend Mike Scheuchzer decided to make Mercyme in collaboration with Bryson.
They made up their studio in a day-care center from where they started their early practices. Drummer Robby Shaffer and Bassist Nathan Cochran joined the band and this led to the composition and later on releasing of six independent projects. After signing a contract with INO Records they released their first music album entitled Almost There. In the year 2002 they received a Dove Award for the song I Can Only Imagine .This single proved to be a hit and earned the band its recognition. It topped the billboard 200 sales chart, U.S. Country Charts and adult contemporary charts and also won double platinum. The reason for this song to be that popular was the fact that it presented real human emotions and was an outcome of the pain and suffering Millard had to go through after his father died of cancer.
In the same year Mercyme released another album Spoken For .Two songs Word of God Speak and Spoken For, from the album were considered to be number one hits on Christian radio charts. The album was certified gold. The reason again for its popularity was the very fact that people could easily associate themselves with it.The songs centered on the belief that God has special place for those in his kingdom who try to establish a relationship with him and work hard to make this bond strong. Everything related to the album including, the album’s cover and booklet, all spoke for themselves and highlighted the main theme of the album. Guitarist Barry Graul joined the band in 2003 and this led to the releasing of their third album Undone. This album produced two hit songs including Here With Me which was on Billboard's Top 100 chart and In the Blink of an Eye took fifth position on R&R's top Christian hits.
Mercyme went on a tour in 2005 with Monk and Neagle, Jeremy Camp and The Afters. In order to establish themselves as a rock band they released another album The Christmas Sessions on 27th September, 2005.In the next year i.e. 2006, the band released another album Coming Up To Breathe that earned 13th position on Billboard 200. Apart from singing for commercial purposes Mercyme played at a concert arranged by Belmont University for the victims of Asian Tsunami. In collaboration with Imagine A Cure and Compassion International they worked, in order to raise money for children suffering from diabetes.
