The PGA Championship is sanctioned by the Professional Golfers Association of America. The championship was held for the first time in 1916. Since inception of the tournament till 1957, the scoring format followed was match play. This basically means that an individual won points for each hole. The first every PGA championship was held at the Siwanoy Country Club in New York and was won by Jim Barnes. Barnes received five hundred dollars as the winning prize along with a diamond studded gold medal donated by Rodman Wanamaker.

This year the PGA championship is going to be played at Whistling Straits. It will be the third time the championship will be played at this venue, having previously been played in 2004 and 2010. Major construction is underway with nearly one hundred and ninety structures being constructed to facilitate the high profile tournament. The Straits course runs for approximately seventy five hundred yards, with the first nine holes covering thirty seven hundred yards. The last nine holes cover roughly thirty eight hundred yards.
