Craig Leipold a famous businessman brought forward the idea of an ice hockey team in early 1997 and at the end of the same year he unveiled the Predators logo! a grueling saber-toothed cat . The Predators started playing in Nashville as at that time only this city had a completed arena and the city also paid $ 80 million to join the league once the franchise was awarded to them. Since 1998 the Predators home ground is the Bridgestone Arena located on 501 Broadway in Nashville but they always practice in the very famous Centennial Sportsplex.
Predators first ever win was against Carolina Hurricanes in their second career match, they won 3-2. From 1998 to 2004 the Predators were not very impressive and lost more games then they won but they did cause a stir with some impressive game play. They won a game in 2000-01 season in Japan against Pittsburgh Penguins in front of the largest audience ever to see an ice hockey match in Japan. In 2001-02 season the Predators crossed an important mark by winning their 100th match becoming second-fastest expansion team to reach this level. Team coach Barry Trotz made history by coaching maximum games for an expansion team i.e. 392 in 2002-03.
The year 2003-04 saw the Predators shine for the first time, they finished the season with 38 wins and 29 losses and went on to play their first ever Conference quarter-final but lost 2-4 in a close match to the Detroit Wings. 2005-06 again was a good one for the Predators as they continuously improved their play and set a record of winning their first four games and started the season at the top with a score of 8 wins and 0 losses a mark only equaled by Toronto Maple Leafs. They finished the season winning 49 games to 25, stood 2nd in the Central and raced to yet another Conference quarter-final but this time lost to San Jose Sharks 1-4. An important fact that clearly indicates the dedication and hard work of the Predators is that from 2005 onwards season by season they always finished with more wins then losses.
In 2007-08 they kept on winning most of their matches and played Conference quarter-finals again 2 times consecutively but lost to the Sharks and Red wings respectively. 2009 season saw one of Predators main players Steve Sullivan suffering from back injury, this was a major set back and they could not qualify for the playoffs. In 2009-10 Predators stood 3rd in the Central and lost in the quarter-final 2-4 in a tough fight against Chicago Blackhawks.
