The Coyotes were originally known as the Winnipeg Jets and were formed in 1971. The Jets were a franchise of the World Hockey Association. Although the WHA had a short life, the Jets dominated the league and won the league trophy in three seasons out of the total seven seasons. They made it to the finals five times but were unsuccessful in two of their outings. After the WHA ceased its operations due to financial reasons, the Jets were one of the four teams to be admitted into the NHL in 1979. The Jets were almost completely restructured after their first draft in the NHL. The best players of the team were taken up by already established franchises. As a result the success of the team in the WHA could not be carried into the NHL and for the first two years, the Jets saw themselves at the bottom of the league.
However the Coyotes picked themselves up fairly quickly. They made it to the playoffs eleven times in fifteen years after the 1980 -81 season. They managed to win two play playoff series, a mammoth feat for the young team, considering they were required to win against two of the strongest teams in the league – the Calgary Flames and the Edmonton Oilers.
In 1996 the team moved to Phoenix from Winnipeg, and became known as the Phoenix Coyotes till 2014. In their 2011 – 2012 season, the team went on to win their first ever trophy in the NHL. They defeated the Minnesota Wild to be crowned as the Division Champions. The title is the highlight of the Coyotes career till date.
The Coyotes will be feeling some relief after their defensive lineup has become somewhat consistent. The head coach has put considerable trust in Zbynek Michalek and Oliver Ekman-Larsson, both of whom are getting used to each other. The trust in the defensive line seems to be churning up results, with the Coyotes’ defense being hailed as tactically strong in recent games. Oliver Larsson has been instrumental in keeping the opposing teams forwards’ at bay. The one hundred and ninety pound defenseman has thrown his weight around and flexed his muscles to make sure the defense of the Coyotes stays strong. Add to that the remarkable performance of their goaltender Mike Smith, the Coyotes are definitely going in the right direction. Smith covered the net brilliantly against the Coyotes’ latest encounter with the Toronto Maple Leafs, blocking twenty eight of the thirty shots that were made against him.
Under the guidance of head coach Dave Tippet and the leadership of Captain Shane Doan the Coyotes are capable of giving any team a tough time on the ice. Doan has been with the team from their days north of the border in Winnipeg, to its current home in Glendale. The forward has spent his entire career with this team and has been an integral part of the of the Coyotes’ organization.
