The Cleveland Cavaliers joined the NBA in 1970 as an expansion team. They remained relatively quiet in the league during the initial years. The first title they won came in 1976, the Central division title. It was followed by a long drought, just over three decades before they saw another title win. It came in the form of the Eastern Conference title in 2007. They defeated the Detroit Pistons in six games to become Conference Champions for the first time. This granted the Cavs their first NBA Finals appearance. However the trip was a short one in which the San Antonio Spurs swept the Cavs in four straight games.
Still, the 2007 season marked the start of better times for the Cavs. They won back to back division titles in 2009 and 2010. In the mid of 2014 the protégé, LeBron James announced his comeback to the Cavs after leaving the team in 2010. The Cavs won their fourth division title in 2015 and advanced to the Conference Finals. They managed to become Conference Champions for the second time, after defeating the Atlanta Hawks in four consecutive games.
The Golden State Warriors on the other hand were established much earlier than the Cavs (1946) and are a more decorated franchise. The Warriors have won three division titles and seven conference crowns. Out of the seven, three of their wins came in the Eastern Conference, while the remaining four have come in their current Western Conference. As a result, since the formation of the NBA, the Warriors have competed in five NBA Finals. Their most memorable Finals have definitely been the 1956 Finals and the 1975 Finals, when they emerged as the NBA Champions. However after their last appearance in 1975, they are playing in the NBA Finals in 2015. They became the division champions and moved to the Conference Finals with a win over the Houston Rockets, four games to one.
The Warriors are fueled forward by the ‘Splash Brothers’; the duo of guards Klay Thompson and Stephen Curry. Both of them were drafted in the first round and have set several NBA records for three pointers. In the 2012 -2013 season they both combined to put up a total of four hundred and eighty one points from three-pointers. It became the NBA best score, which was eventually improved by the duo again in the 2014 -2015 season. They put together five hundred and twenty five points from threes and set the bar even higher with an incredible success rate of forty four percent.
Although the Cavs have put up a great team effort in coming to the finals, LeBron James has been the impetus behind their success. The four time MVP and two times Finals MVP has been in ravishing form this season. He scored at an average of twenty seven point two points per game during the playoffs. Playing in his fifth consecutive final, James is no foreigner to the pressure of big games. It showed during the first game when he put up the game’s best score of forty four points.
