The Harlem Globetrotters’ History
The Harlem Globetrotters was formed in 1927 when Abraham Saperstein took over as the coach of the basketball team ‘Savoy Big Five.’ At the time basketball was considered primarily to be a ‘white-persons’ sport. Abraham’s team largely consisted of African-American players due to which he thought it would be best if the Globetrotters were based in Harlem, New York (hub of African-American community). The initial lineup of the team consisted of players, Byron Long, Walter Wright, Al Pullins, Willis Oliver and Andy Washington.
The Globetrotters’ 90 Years Celebration
In its debut season, the Harlem Globetrotters competed in a total of 118 games, winning an astounding 101 games. Within a decade’s time, the Globetrotters had played more than 1000 away games in South Dakota, Washington, Montana, Iowa and Minnesota. The team didn’t play a home game until the 1960s. It was in 1939 that the team started adding funny antics, on-court comedy and tricks which received an overwhelming response from audiences. Since then, the Harlem Globetrotters bring hilarity and excitement to each game, once they have established a lead over their opponent. Fans can watch their favorite exhibition team live.
