Minor League Baseball team Columbus Clippers was founded in 1977 and is based in Columbus, Ohio. Cleveland Indians are the major league baseball affiliates for this team with whom Clippers plays as a triple A affiliate. Columbus Clippers plays in International League of Minor League Baseball. Their home ground is located in Arena District of Columbus, at the corner of Nationwide Blvd. and Neil Ave. and is called Huntington Park. The team moved to Huntington Park recently in 2009 before which their home was Cooper Stadium that was called Franklin County Stadium prior to 1984. Clippers played their last game at Cooper Stadium in 2008, when the whole stadium was sold out and there was a crowd of over 16,777 people sitting in front of them. According to statistics, that crowd was the third largest ever in stadium history. Cooper Stadium was also called as The Coop. Huntington Park, their new home, has the capacity to accommodate over 10,100 fans at a time.
Columbus Clippers stepped into their professional career in 1977 when their affiliation was with Pittsburgh Pirates. After two years of play their affiliation was changed to New York Yankees in 1979. The new affiliates suited them, manifesting in a long journey together spanning over 28 years until they were affiliated to Washington Nationals in 2007. In 2008 their affiliation was again changed to Cleveland Indians that is currently ongoing.
The team has had a great playing record, winning many major titles at their level. They are one of the few teams to appear in Governor’s Cup series over 11 times. Out of their 11 appearances, eight of the championship titles belong to them. They had succeeded in winning League titles on many occasions, including for the seasons 1979, 1980, 1981, 1987, 1991, 1992, 1996 and 2010. In 2010 they also won the Class title. Columbus Clippers has yet to win a Division title, but their persistent efforts and hard work is a proof of the fact that they have the capability to do so very soon.
With Mike Sarbaugh as the Manager and Ken Schnacke as the General Manager, the team is currently owned by Franklin County under the Government of Ohio State.
