Southern Methodist Mustangs
The Mustangs were formed by a mathematics professor at the university in 1915, who became the first coach for a number of different sports. Their football, basketball, baseball and track teams were the first ones to be set up, followed by more than fourteen other varsity sports programs. The SMU campus is well equipped with state of the art machinery and equipment. There are also separate arenas, grounds and courts for all the various types of sports played there to ensure that the Mustangs get the best facilities possible. With grants in excess of a billion dollars, SMU has no problem in providing its students with the best services, which includes scholarships and easy payment plans that all students are allowed to apply for.
Of their seventeen varsity sports programs, their football team has perhaps been the most successful team. The first football game was played in 1915 and was among the first sports related activity carried out at SMU. Over the years the Mustangs football team has been through many highs and lows, but they have always carried the tradition of fostering some of the best football talents in the game. They have had ten players inducted in to the College Football Hall of Fame and have had five former students go on to be inducted in to the Pro-Football Hall of Fame. They have had over twenty six all Americans, one Heisman Trophy winner, Doak Walker, and currently have twelve players playing professional football in the NFL.
The past few years have seen them improve their record and post winning seasons after a bit of a drought. The Mustangs moved to the American Conference last season and they will be looking forward to playing in a very competitive conference. They have won eleven conference championships, two division crowns and three national titles so they know how to win. They will be taking inspiration from their past, that is for sure.
The Mustangs basketball team has been involved in numerous NCAA and invitational tournaments posting decent results throughout. The Mustangs have been crowned regular season conference champions on thirteen occasions while they have lifted the conference tournament title once. They have also made it to the NCAA Tournament ten times while reaching the Elite Eight and the Final Four stages of the competition twice and once respectively.
In addition to these sports, the Mustangs have been prolific in many other sports as well. They have had numerous students represent their countries at the Olympic Games. Nineteen Mustangs were chosen for the 1992 Olympics and this number was surpassed four years later when twenty three athletes from SMU were selected for the 1996 Games. Mustangs that have had the chance to go to the Olympics have won gold medals as well.
The SMU diving team has been very famous too, producing quite a few Olympic medal winners. They have won the national championship in both indoor and outdoor categories. The Mustangs have also been a dominant force in soccer and have been the top ranked team in the nation in the recent past. They have made numerous appearances in the NCAA tournaments and have finished in the top eight teams. They have also won sixteen conference championships which include winning six consecutive titles twice in their history (1977-1982 and 1997-2002). They have also won the conference tournament on seven occasions.
SMU has always had a tremendous tradition of producing world class athletes and they hope to continue that for many more years to come. The time has come for them to take their legacy forward.
