South Carolina Gamecocks
The name Carolina Gamecocks is derived from the infamous Carolina war hero, Thomas Sumter. He was called The Carolina Gamecock in honor of his fierce fighting tactics irrespective of the size of his regiment and his own physical stature. During the American Revolution Due to his bravery and courage a British General commented on his velour and called him a Gamecock. Initially, the men's varsity sports teams were called Fighting Gamecocks and the Women' s teams were referred to as Lady Gamecocks. Later, this tradition broke as a deliberate attempt to counter gender bias in their athletic department. This was also done to communicate the message to the masses and remove their misconception that the mascot of the team does not honor or promote animal blood sport in any possible way.
The men's soccer team competes in the South Eastern Conference rather than the NCAA. This is so because the SEC does not sponsor men's soccer. The teams march on the battle field wearing school colors, black and garnet. Some official merchandise has also added the golden color as well. The golden color represents the spurs worn by gamecocks in cockfights. The very dynamic and very capable athletic department of the University is funded by the private money from the Gamecock club. Both the Universities have remained bitter opponents to each other since 1889, the year in which Clemson University was founded. The annual Carolina-Clemson football game is known to be the longest uninterrupted series in the South..
