Northwestern Wildcats is the name used by the sports programs that play from the Northwestern University. The educational institution supports a total of 19 varsity teams of games including football, basketball, lacrosse, wrestling, golf, softball, swimming and baseball. The Northwestern Wildcats football team was formed in 1876. It played its first game in the same year. The playoff was an exhibition game between the Chicago Football Club and the Northwestern University students. The team’s debut intercollegiate game wasn’t held until 1882 against Lake Forest University. Initially playing as an independent team, the Wildcats joined the Western Conference in 1896, becoming one of the six charter members. Northwestern Wildcats are currently a Division I NCAA team that plays in the Western Division of the Big Ten Conference. 


The Northwestern Wildcats ranked number one in the NCAA in 1936 and 1962.
