Minnesota Golden Gophers
With gold and maroon as official colors, the Minnesota Golden Gophers is one of the topmost ranking college sports programs in the US. Its teams play everything from basketball, golf and cross country to ice hockey, swimming, gymnastics and track & field. Aside from the women’s ice hockey team which plays in the Western College Hockey Association, all teams are part of the Big Ten Conference. The program also has a Cheerleaders and the Dance Team, whose members present brilliant performances in many games. The Gophers mascot is traced back to the state itself which was known as the Gopher State as far back as 1857. It referred to a story in which politicians pulled up a locomotive.
The university took up the name and the Minnesota Golden Gophers came into existance. Initially known only as the Gophers, the title Golden was added after the very successful years of 1932 to 1941 when the program lost only twelve games in nine years, won five National Championships and seven Big Ten titles. A golden decade, it saw the name change accordingly and the program has been known as such since then. The university has won Seven National Championships in football, followed by three in men’s basketball.
The baseball team has won three National Championships with the men’s ice hockey winning seven, the last two in 2002 and 2003. The women’s ice hockey team has won five National Championships, all since 2000, with the last two in 2012 and 2013. As the current champions and Number One women’s ice hockey team in the nation, they have gained much fame. Both the men’s golf and men’s outdoor track & field teams have won a National Championship. The wrestling team won championships in 2001, 2002 and 2007.
The baseball team has also appeared in the NCAA Tournament a record thirty times. Of these, seven have been won since 2000 and the last three were in 2007, 2009 and 2010. The team has also won twenty two Big Ten Regular Season Championships of which the last five were won in 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2010. They have also won eight Big Ten Conference Tournament Championships, the last in 2010. Similarly, the men’s basketball team has won eight Big Ten Regular Season Championships and appeared an equal number of times in the NCAA Tournament. Of these, three are in the Sweet 16 and one in the Elite 8.
The men’s basketball team also has eleven NIT appearances to its name, the last two of which occurred in 2008 and 2012. The team has also won an NIT Championship, with the women’s basketball team equally competitive. It has eight NCAA Tournament appearences of which three are in the Sweet 16, one in the Elite 8 and one in the Final Four.
The four-time National Champion men’s cross country team is followed by a women’s cross country team that has won two Big Ten Team Championships. The men’s football also has eighteen Big Ten Conference Championships to its name, two IAAN Championships and fifteen Bowl Games of which five Bowls were won. The team has also been honored with four historical travelling trophies; the Little Brown Jug, Floyd of Rosedale, Paul Bunyan’s Axe and the Governor’s Victory Bell.
