2014 BCS Championship Game
Founded in 1998, the BCSChampionship Game is set to be held for the last time in 2014, after which it will be replaced by the College Football Playoff. It is itself the continuation of two previous bowl game series; the Bowl Alliance, played from 1995 to 1997, and the Bowl Coalition, played from 1992 to 1994. The payout is equal to eighteen million dollars, a breathtaking amount. Various companies have sponsored this Bowl Championship Series’ final game, including Tostitos, FedEx, Nokia, Allstate, AT&T, Discover, Citi and Virgin. In 2013, the first and second teams in the series, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team and the Alabama Crimson Tide football team competed against each other.
The Alabama Crimson Tide emerged as the victors in the 2013 BCSChampionship Game, and are thus the reigning champions in the series and the game. In 2014, for the last time, the best two college football teams in the country are going to face each other on the field. Not only does the winner of this game wins a cash prize but also wins the NCAA Division I FBS National Championship, emerging as the best football team in the US. The two best teams are chosen each year via several polls, including the Coaches’ Poll by USA Today and computer rankings based on the teams’ performances during the season.
The 2013 game took place at Miami Gardens, Florida’s Sun Life Stadium and featured the two best teams from the 2012 season. The last game of the series will take place in January 2014, with the College Football Playoff replacing it. It is a four team system style of championship, whose first game is set to take place after the end of the 2014 season. The very first game was played after the Pac-10 Conference, the Big Ten Conference and the Rose Bowl game formed the Bowl Championship Series, to replace the older Bowl Alliance. The older series had been incomplete as some conferences were left out, with the BCS becoming the first to fully ensure that the two best teams in the nation compete against each other.
Initially, the final championship game of the BCS was rotated between the four bowl games that were part of it; the Sugar Bowl, the Rose Bowl, the Fiesta Bowl and the Orange Bowl. In 2006, this was changed when the final game became a separate bowl game, played each year after New Year’s Day. Its venue has since then been rotated between the four venues of the four bowl games but with it being organized separately. The very first bowl game featured the Tennessee Volunteers facing the Florida State Seminoles, with the former emerging as the victors in the 1999 Fiesta Bowl game.
In 2010, the Auburn Tigers emerged as the victors over the Oregon Ducks, with the Alabama Crimson Tide emerging as the victors in 2011. They again won the final bowl game in 2013, for the 2012, having thus won it twice, consecutively. The Alabama Crimson Tide football team also rank first, overall, with three BCS Championships won, out of three appearences, resulting in a perfect record. The University of Oklahoma’s football team ranks first in terms of appearances. With the stage set for the last finals game, BCS Championship Game tickets are available for those who want to catch the action live.
