Franti started his career as being a part of a band named "The Beatnigs" in 1986. The band called it a day in 1990 to come together as "The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy" in which he collaborated with the band member of his previous band, Rono Tse. The Beatnigs was the album released by his first band while Hypocrisy Is the Greatest Luxury and Spare as Annie and Other Tales were the albums from his second band. The band, "Michael Franti and Spearhead" was formed in 1994 and released its debut album with the title, Home. The album featured hip hop songs but did not do a very good job. 1997 brought another album of Franti by the title, Chocolate Supa Highway and featured hip hop music. Stay Human was released in 2001 with Boo Boo Wax / Six Degrees Records. The fourth studio album of Franti was released in 2003 and was titled, Everyone Deserves Music. The album featured some hit songs like "Everyone Deserves Music" and "Bomb the World".
Before realizing his love for music, Franti was an avid basketball player which proved that he excels everything he does. Fifth studio album of Franti came out in 2006 with the title, Yell Fire! It featured rap and funk music. The album gained fame in US and sold thousands of albums. The next album of Franti was a pure reggae album and was released in 2008 featuring the chart topping single, "Say Hey (I Love You)". Franti’s latest album came out in September 2010 with the name, the Sound of Sunshine. The album is recorded by Capital and produced by Sly & Robbie. The album featured the single "Sound of Sunshine" and received positive reviews from all over.
Franti’s live and compilation albums include Stolen Moments: Red Hot + Cool, Weeds, Live In Sydney, Love kamikaze, Live: Alaska, Power to the Peaceful Festival 2005, Snakes on a Plane: The Album, Yell Fire! Live, CLIF Green Notes Protect the Places We Play and the Wire: And All the Pieces Matter – Five Years of Music from The Wire. Franti went solo for a while and released two solo albums in 2000 and 2003 which were titled, Live at the Baobab and Songs from the Front Porch.
Franti has also collaborated with other artist and other projects like Infinity Within in 1992, Blue in the Faces in 1995, Seven in 1997, Stay Human in 2001, 1 Giant Leap in 2002, The World Around in 2003, Look At All the Love We Found in 2005, What’s This in 2006 and All Rebel Rockers in 2009. "Of Course You Can", "Hole in the Bucket", "People in the Middle", "Positive", "U Can’t Sing R Song", "Why Oh Why", "Rebel Music", "Keep me Lifted", "Rock The Nation", "Sometimes", "Soul shine", "Bomb The World", "Everyone Deserves Music", "Obama Song" and "Say Hey (I Love You)" are the hit and chart topping singles of Michael Franti.
