Born in Compton, California, YG is an African-American rapper who rose to stardom pretty quickly. Keenan Jackson known by the initials YG or Young Gangsta is a rapper cum songwriter initially associated with the Westside Tree Top Piru gang. The talented singer is linked to the “Jerkin’ Movement” in California along with the other rappers like Ty$. The 25 years old artist has been collaborating with various stars in the music industry, producing mixtapes and singles that instantly cut through. The American rapper gathered a huge fan following online after posting his mixtapes on the internet. The talented singer caught the attention of big names in the industry and was able to secure commercial success in the subsequent years.
The Californian hip-hop culture had influenced YG’s passion for the genre and the rapper ultimately formed the label Pu$haz Ink in 2008 with DJ Mustard. The XXL Fashion Magazine featured YG and he became a famous MC appearing on songs by Young Jeezy, E-40, Freddie Gibbs, Nipsey Hussle and Travis Porter. In June 2013, the much-loved rapper signed to Jeezy’s label CTE World and gave famous singles like “My Nigga” that featured Jeezy himself along with Rich Homie Quan, notching 19th position on the US Billboard Hot 100. The song became the highest charting track ever by YG. His track “Snitches Ain’t” notched the 100th position on the Hot 100 and debuted at number 11 on Heatseeker’s Songs chart. The song also featured hip-hop rappers like Nipsey Hussle, Tyga and Snoop Dog. By then, YG had developed close ties with established artists in the industry and was coordinating with many of them for his next project.
In March 2013, YG released his much-awaited debut record “My Krazy Life” under the labels Def Jam, CTE World and Pu$haz Ink. The album featured guests like ScHoolboy Q, Richie Homie Quan and Drake. Fortunately for the artist, the album proved to be a smash hit as fans and critics both lauded it for its crisp R&B and rap. It topped the US R&B and Rap chart and notched the 2nd position on the US Mainstream chart. On December 2014, YG released a short film and soundtrack under the Def Jam, CTE World and Pu$haz Ink label. The film titled “Blame It On The Streets” starring guests like DJ Quik, Charlie Hood, Big Wy, RJ and many more, highlighted the rapper’s life and his early struggle in Compton. The short film written by YG himself along with Darryl Rodgers showcased the artist’s notorious stints with the Piru gang and as a burglar.
