Schoolboy Q is the stage name of Quincy Mathew Hanley. He was born in Wiesbaden, Germany in 1986. His father was in the army but after his parents’ separation he moved to California with his mother. Hanley grew up in the neighborhood of Hoover and Figueroa in Los Angeles. He was an avid football player from an early age. Schoolboy Q started taking interest in music during his mid-teens and also started writing rap songs. But he never took music as a professional career choice till the age of 21. In 2006 he got associated with a Carson based recording label called Top Dawg Entertainment. Schoolboy Q also started collaborating with other artists who were associated with the Top Dawg label. He had the chance to collaborate with rap and hip hop musicians such as Ab-Soul and Jay Rock. Apart from the Top Dawg, he has also worked with the Interscope Records.
Schoolboy Q performs both solo as well as in a band. His band is named Black Hippy and its members include Schoolboy Q, Jay Rock, Ab-Soul and Kendrick Lamar. Black Hippy band has released albums including Schoolboy Turned Hustla, Gangsta & Soul and Setbacks. As a solo artist Schoolboy Q released his first studio album Setbacks in 2011. This album mainly focused on genres like west coast hip hop, gangsta rap and hip hop. It immediately caught the attention of music lovers and reached number 12 on the US Top Rap Albums, number 25 on the US Top R&B Albums and 100 on the US Billboard 200. He released another hit album the very next year titled Habits & Contradictions. This album sold around 50,000 copies. It has 18 tracks including the popular singles “There He Go,” “Oxy Music,” “How We Feeling,” “Blessed,” “Tookie,” “Raymond 1969” and “Hands on the Wheel.” His latest album is Oxymoron, released in early 2014. This proved to be the best effort by Schoolboy Q as it sold over 200,000 copies. The album topped the US Billboard, US R&B and US Rap charts in countries including Canada, France, Germany, Switzerland, UK and New Zealand.
Schoolboy Q has collaborated with musicians including ASAP Rocky, Skeme, Trinidad James, Danny Brown, Tinashe, French Montana and Ryan Lewis. He has also appeared as a guest artist on songs like “Cuts Up” by Tyga, “The Is Me” by Fas Action, “Smoke Chronic” by Jay Rock, “Get Into the Moment” by Kid Ink, “Food Savers & Scissors” by CyHi the Prynce, “SOPA” by Ab-Soul and “Fair Fight” by Strong Arm Steady. “Take the Pain Away,” “Live Again,” “Druggys wit Hoes,” “There He Go” and “Man of the Year” are some of the hit video songs of Schoolboy Q.
