Unlike most artists, Nelly didn’t discover his love for music at an early age. He spent his teenage years playing baseball, however his interests changed after his parents got divorced and he and his mother moved to St. Louis. Nelly made his first musical group, St. Lunatics, with high school friends and found some local success in 1996 with their song “Gimme What You Got”. Sadly, that success didn’t last long when a major record deal failed to appear.
Lunatics decided that Nelly was better off for solo acts and could bring more attention to the group. It wasn’t long when Nelly was signed by Universal for a solo contract in 1999. In 2000, Nelly released his first solo album Country Grammar featuring St. Lunatics, Lil Wayne and Cedric the Entertainer. The album was a certified super hit in the United States and topped the Billboard album chart. His first solo track ranked seventh on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart and ranked number one on the rap chart.
In 2001, Nelly went back and joined St. Lunatics in the studio. The group released their first album, Free City, which was a hit in the US. Nelly released his second solo record, Nellyville, in 2002. Nellyville reached number one on the Billboard 200 and was nominated for various Grammy Awards. His song “Hot in here” was a global hit and took the 2003 Grammy Award for “Best Male Solo Rap”.
Nellyville’s other top hits were “Dilemma” featuring Destiny’s Child’s Kelly Rowland, ”Air Force Ones” featuring Murphy Lee and St. Lunatics and ”Work it” featuring Justin Timberlake. One week after the release of Nellyville, Nelly was ranked number one on ten different Billboard charts!
The rising star released yet another hit remix album called Da Derrty Versions: The Reinvention. In 2004, Nelly released two more successful studio albums, Sweat and Suit. Suit topped the Billboard albums chart while Sweat ranked at number two. In the following year, Sweat Suit, a compilation of the previous two albums along with three additional songs, was released. The album did really well, based on the success of the single “Grillz,” which topped the charts again.
Three years later in 2008, Nelly launched yet another successful album, Brass knuckles. This was his fifth studio album to chart well and won Nelly acclaim from the industy. His successful hits from the album include “Party People”, “Stepped On My J’z” and “Body On Me”.
In 2010, Nelly released his album 5.0, from which “Just A Dream”, “Move That Body” and “Gone” were super hits. Just a Dream went on to become a global hit and gained more attention for the artist. The song has been covered by numerous other international artists and has over a million views on YouTube.
