The group was formed in 1989, by music producers Thomas McElroy and Denzil Foster, who wanted to assemble a band of virtuoso singers in the style of the all-female trios prevalent during the 1950s and 1960s. The original line-up for En Vogue consisted of Terry Ellis, Cindy Herron, Dawn Robinson and Maxine Jones. A year after the band was founded; En Vogue released its first full-length studio album. Titled Born to Sing, the album was a notable success upon its release. It reached No. 3 on the Billboard R&B Albums chart as well as No. 21 on the Billboard 200 chart. One of the album’s songs, “Hold On”, became a hit single, reaching the coveted No. 2 position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart whilst also receiving significant radio play. The song also topped the Hot Dance Music/Club Play and R&B singles charts in the U.S, topped European pop charts and peaked in the U.K at number five.
Furthermore, it earned En Vogue their first ever Soul Train Award for R&B/Urban Contemporary Single of the Year, Group, Band or Duo as well as a Billboard Music Award for R&B Single of the Year. En Vogue also received Grammy nomination in the Best R&B Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group category. Other singles from Born to Sing, were equally, if not more successful. Both “You Don’t Have to Worry” and “Lies” peaked at number one on the Billboard R&B chart, on which “Don’t Go” also reached number three. Eventually, Born to Sing became a certified platinum album. Following their promising debut, En Vogue released their sophomore effort, Funky Divas in 1992. The album shared the success of its predecessor with hits like “Free Your Mind”, “My Lovin’ (You’re Never Gonna Get It)” and “Giving Him Something He Can Feel.” All three singles were top-ten hits, with each of the latter two reaching number one on R&B charts in the U.S. The album itself was certified triple platinum by the RIAA, going on to sell more than five million copies, making it En Vogue’s best-selling release to date.
With this success came yet another string of honors, by the end of which, En Vogue had been nominated for five Grammy awards and won an American Music Award for Favorite Soul/R&B Album. The group was also awarded three MTV Music Video Awards, for Best Dance Video, Best R&B Video and Best Choreography. En Vogue was also presented the Entertainer of the Year Award by Soul Train. Over the next several years, En Vogue continued on a path of success, making frequent television appearances and being featured in some of America’s most prominent publications, such as Rolling Stone and Entertainment Weekly. During this time, the band performed songs for a number of film soundtracks, one of which “Don’t Let Go (Love)” for the movie Set It Off. The song is still En Vogue’s most successful hit, and was certified platinum, reaching number one on the R&B singles chart and number two on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
The band also toured the world, performing in several countries in Europe, where it was just as well received as itin America. During the recording of the group’s third album, Dawn Robinson left En Vogue over contractual objections. The remaining group continued with the recordings and released in 1997. Titled EV3, the album repeated En Vogue’s trend of success and reached number eight on the Billboard R&B and Billboard 200 charts. It was also certified gold by the RIAA, and had hit singles like "Whatever" and “Too Gone, Too Long.
En Vogue has continued to be a successful band through thick and thin and now stands as the eighteenth most successful band of the 1990s, according to Billboard Magazine. Their songs have touched millions all over the world, who attend their concerts eagerly. These fans will be happy to know that cheap En Vogue tickets are now widely available.
