New Edition came into existence when Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, and Bobby Brown while still elementary school students came together as one. To begin with the band carried a pure dance and pop tag. Ralph Tresvant and Ronnie DeVoe joined New Edition and the lineup was all set to guarantee entertainment via their band wagon. With the Jackson 5's inspiration and edge, a stage performance of The Love You Save
at a talent show scouted them to Streetwise label. Form here onwards they jumped into commercial production. Candy Girl (
1983) their debut release hit stands and bombarded music charts becoming a top monster hit of the eighties. Consequently Candy Girl
the album was released that too claimed hit numbers Popcorn Love
and This the End.
The unprecedented success of the album gathered up huge teenage following. This called labels like MCA to come forward and contract New Edition.
New Edition under MCA worked on their sophomore release and reached new heights of fame. The year 1984 will always be remembered for smashing numbers by New Edition which included Cool It Now and Mr. Telephone Man
. These numbers along with Candy Girl
hits rocked teeny bops of the time. New Edition was hype turning into rage that was an iconic success and representative of teen spirit and life in the United States. This level of acknowledgement and appreciation form the young masses was the starting point for the band. The official release of All for Love (1985) became
an awaited event of the year. The album stirred a lot of waves in, the critic’s circles, public and commercial music circuits.
With time New Edition’s vocals, music, theme, lyrics and performances became mature. Funkier on the music and extra romantic in the mood, their weights shifted from dance numbers to more soft love ballads. Another fresh change was Christmas All Over the World
their first holiday album. However, this release led to Bobby
Brown's detachment from New Edition. Next in line was the band cover album and replacement of Brown’s position by Johnny Gill. Heart Break
featuring Gill’s deep vocals was a distinctive offer that featured many R&B chart toppers and hits. Can You Stand the Rain
remains an astounding hit of the late eighties. Heart Break
, proved to be a bad omen as New Edition disbanded. Gill and Tresvant sought solo careers leaving Bell, Biv and DeVoe . The trio stuck together and released Poison
. This release was a trend setter for all new jack swing and inspired aspiring artists of the genre to come forward. The band also collaborated with Head of State and LSG.
