About Gladys Knight
Born on 28th May, 1944, Gladys Knight started singing when she was only four years old. She got a little recognition when she won the Original Amateur Hour contest at the age of seven. By the time she was eight in 1953, Gladys, her sister Brenda, her brother Merald and two of her cousins Elenor and William Guest formed a band of their own called The Pips. Soon afterwards Eleanor and Brenda left the band who were then replaced by Gladys friend Langston George and cousin Edward Pattern. The members change also prompted a name change for the band itself to Gladys Knight & The Pips. As the year came to a close The Pips had started to tour which helped them establish a small fan base for the group and Gladys Knight tickets sales started to rise.
With Gladys Knight being the vocalist and the voice of the band they released various hit songs like I Heard It Through the Grapevine, If I Were Your Woman, Daddy Could Swear (I Declare) and the biggest hit of them all the Grammy Award winning Neither One of Us (Wants to Be the First to Say Goodbye). The band left their current label Motown and signed for Buddah Records in the year 1973. The switch took their success to another level with smash hits like Midnight Train to Georgia, a Grammy winning song.
Gladys Knight and her band then did a soundtrack for the movie Claudine in 1974. The soundtrack turned out to be a huge hit especially in Europe where it topped charts in various countries. In 1978, Gladys Knight went solo and released her first two solo LP’s Miss Gladys Knight in 1978 and Gladys Knight the next year. In 1980, Gladys once again teamed up with The Pips to work on new music. That effort manifested itself in the form of another two LPs About Love in 1980 and Touch in 1981.
Gladys Knight and The Pips worked together one last time on another LP All Our Love which was released in 1987. The first song Love Overboard became a big hit and brought their way a third Grammy Award. They followed it up with a very fruitful tour in 1988 and The Pips retired right after the tour. That left the stage to Gladys and she re-started her career as a solo artist.
Her third LP was titled Good Woman which released in the year 1991. The LP was a humongous hit and went straight to the number one spot on the R&B albums chart and the song Men from the album reached number two on R&B single charts. Gladys Knight followed that up with the release of her next album Just for You which ended up getting gold certification and a Grammy Nomination for the Best R&B Album.
