They were founded at the University of Notre Dame by members of two rock bands, Stomper Bob and Tashi Station from the university. They started with singing cover songs, covering bands such as Guns N’ Roses and the Grateful Dead.

Soon after the release of this album, they had become one of the most popular bands in Notre Dame and South Bend. They started performing in other colleges and also released a live album. In 2000, they were joined by Jake Cinninger who contributed many original songs and led to a heavier sound. Their next album, One Fat Sucka, was released soon after. In 2002, Umphreys McGee released a recording titled as Local Band Does OK and then performed at the Bonnaroo Music Festival where they were seen live by more than a hundred thousand people, selling the largest number of CDs at the event, more so than famous artists such as Norah Jones and Trey Anastasio. In 2004, they released the album Anchor Drops and also landed a distribution deal that led to their music being sold in stores all over the US. This album received rave reviews from various music magazines and was followed by a performance at the Bonnaroo Festival.
