The Del Mccoury Band
In the early stages of formation, Del McCoury and the Dixie Pals played with McCoury’s brother Jerry as the bassist and Del as the guitarist. During the ‘80s, this amalgamation shaped into the current The Del McCoury Band when his sons Robbie and Ronnie joined the lineup. The former played banjo while the latter’s instrument of choice was mandolin.
Through the decades, Del has won the highest accolades in the genre. These include inductions into the International Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame and the Lifetime Achievement Award ‘National Heritage Fellowship’ presented by the National Endowment for the Arts.
In a career that spans over two decades, Del McCoury has led his band since their debut in 1992 to their latest studio album twenty one years later. As of today, the Del McCoury Band has released fourteen studio albums. The band has charted nine albums on the Billboard Top Bluegrass Albums chart. Out of these nine, seven peaked in among the Top 5 of the chart while the 2008 Moneyland went on to become number one. Two years before Moneyland, the band released a gospel-inspired album that went on to the Top 30 on the Top Christian Albums.
In 1999, their studio album, The Mountain, became their highest charted album on the Billboard Top Country Albums by securing a spot among the Top 20. This fusion of bluegrass and country was so powerful that it did extremely well in Canada as well. There it reached the number fourteen spot on the country charts. The outcome had a positive impact on the band’s popularity added country fans to their bluegrass following. the band collaborated with the famous Preservation Hall Jazz Band for their 2011 studio album American Legacies.
The biggest success for the Del McCoury Band came in 2005 when they released their eighth studio album The Company We Keep. This album included singles such as “Never Grow Up Boy,” “Mountain Song,” “Eyes That Won’t Meet Mine,” “Seventh Heaven” and “Untamed.” On the Billboard, the album debuted at number two on the Top Bluegrass Albums chart. This albums stands out among the rest as it won them the ‘Best Bluegrass Album’ at the Grammy Awards.
Almost a decade later, their latest album The Streets of Baltimore hit the shelves internationally. This album is the latest addition to their discography and the band is now touring in support of it. For 2015, they will be headlining through some of the best bluegrass and country festivals in North America. They will be hitting the stage at events such as the DelFest, Graves Mountain Festival of Music, Huck Finn Jubilee Bluegrass Music Festival, Blue Ox Festival, Big Barrel Country Music Festival, Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival, Rockygrass 2015 and Northwest String Summit 2015 among numerous others.
