The Beach Boys
The Beach Boys originated in 1961 in Hawthorne as a pentad comprising the three brothers Carl, Dennis and Brian Wilson along with Mike Love and Al Jardine. Their debut came via their regional hit, the Top 20 single, Surfin’. In the initial years, the band gained popularity for its cheerful lyrics highlighting the Southern California lifestyle fast cars, surfing and romance, and its close vocal harmonies. Brian was the main songwriter for the group until the mid sixties and his lyrics directed much of the group’s direction. The album “Pet Sounds” and the single, Good Vibrations, both saw Brian taking the group away from their usual simple surf rock to complex, multi-layered sounds.
In 1967, other band members also started contributing to the lyrics of the ensemble’s music and the Beach Boys saw themselves recording a string of albums with varied musical styles. This eclectic approach earned the band lot of critical acclaim and commercial success which continued for the next decade and a half. The album, “Sunflower”, released in 1970, revealed individual talents of each member. The album showed Carl as a distinctive producer, Mike as a dynamic front man and Dennis as a notable lyricist.
In the late nineties, after the tragic deaths of Dennis and Carl, the Beach Boys continued under Bruce and Mike as a touring group with a revolving lineup of performers who also pursued their solo careers alongside. By the turn of the decade, despite their strained mutual relations, all the surviving members of the group came together for another release, “The Smile Sessions” as well as a new schedule of live performances.
On the fiftieth anniversary of the band, the members released a studio album, “That’s Why God Made the Radio”, which debuted at number three on the Billboard 200. Following the release of this album, the members embarked on a worldwide tour that was commemorated on the live album, “The Beach Boys Live: The 50th Anniversary Tour”.
The beach Boys made history in their immensely successful career spanning more than five decades. They have been titled as the world’s number one vocal group by NME Magazine. Rolling Stone has previously awarded the band with the “Band of the Year” title. The group is ranked twelfth on the Rolling Stone’s list of the ‘100 Greatest Artists of All Times’. In 1980, The Beach Boys received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988. A decade down the line, the ensemble was chosen for the Vocal Group Hall of Fame, as well as for a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
The Beach Boys have been regarded as pioneering figures in the evolution of popular music. They are among the very few bands that have enjoyed critical acclaim and commercial success for such long period of time.
