A budding romance and career
Teresa Williams grew up on a West Tennessee farm surrounded by music from an early age. She sang at church and revivals before she began a professional career in music. Collecting inspiration and influence from the south including the Nashville and Kentucky music scene, Teresa’s voice drips with the sweet and authentic melodies that the area is known for.
For the sake of her music career, she moved to New York City where she featured in bands like Southern Comfort and Swing Fever. Teresa also originated the role of Sara Carter, lead singer of the Original Carter Family, for the musical Keep On the Sunny Side. It was in NYC that she met future husband and duo partner, Larry Campbell.
Playing together at the city's famed Bottom Line Club during the mid 80's, the two were instantly smitten with each other and married soon after. Though they continued on their separate musical highways for years, they kept circling back to each other. Adept at an array of stringed instruments and music styles, Larry became associated with a number of notable acts which also includes an eight-year stint with the iconic Bob Dylan. Teresa meanwhile honed her singing chops collaborating with artists like Mavis Staples, Emmylou Harris and Buddy Miller.
Collaborating with the greats
Williams and Campbell have toured together with a number of iconic acts including the Levon Helm Band, Phil Lesh and Friends and Hot Tuna. Among their many recordings are Jorma Kaukonen's River of Time, Steady as She Goes by Hot Tuna, and Levon Helm's three Grammy-winning records Dirt Farmer, Ramble at the Ryman and Electric Dirt. After Helm's death, the two have continued their association with his Midnight Rambles band and the Dirt Farmer band. Teresa has also contributed her talents to Helm's MerleFest Ramble and the concert movie Love for Levon.
