Shreya Ghoshal was born on 12th March, 1984 in the city of Durgapur. Her family moved to the town of Rawatbhata and that is where she grew up. Shreya was introduces to music at the tender age of four when she teamed up with her mother to play the harmonium. That was the start of her fascination with everything music. She went and learnt the basics of the music traditionally played in Hindi from Maheshchandra Sharma. Shreya went on to take part in the famous Zee TV reality singing contest Sa Re Ga Ma as a kid. Her incredible singing wowed everyone on the way to her winning the competition. Legendary composer Kalyanji was one of the judges of the competition and he was so impressed by the young singer that he convinced her parents to re-locate to Mumbai. He took Shreya under his tutelage and honed her skills for a year and a half in classical music. The time she spent with Kalyanji played a big part in smoothing out all the rough edges and turning her into a complete singer.
 
Shreya Ghoshal once again took part in Sa Re Ga Ma but this time in the programs adult category. Her exploits on the show brought her to the notice of Sanjay Leela Bhansali, a director and one of the biggest names in Bollywood. He provided Shreya with the break she had always wanted in 2000 when he offered her the chance to provide background singing voice to the character Paro in his movie Devdas. The movie turned out to be a blockbuster and its songs went straight to the top of all major charts and that list included the five songs sung by Shreya. On top of that she won the Filmfare Award in the category of the Best Female Playback Singer and also the Filmfare RD Burman Award as a newcomer.
