Pixies started off as a rock duo consisting of Santiago and Francis, when both of them were attending the University of Massachusetts. After getting Kim Deal and David Lovering on board with them as a bassist and drummer, the band was named Pixies. In its early days, the band used to perform at local bars and clubs in Boston and its suburbs. While they were playing with Throwing Muse on a concert, they were discovered by Gary Smith, who worked hard with the band. With Gary, the band went on to record its first EP in 1987, titled “The Purple Tape.” It was a seventeen-track demo tape, which was recorded within three days at the Fort Apache Studios.
The band later signed a record contract with 4AD and released its debut studio album “Come On Pilgrim” in 1987. In UK, the album entered the indie album chart, where it stayed for 29 weeks at number five. The album dealt with a number of subjects, ranging from poverty to sexual frustration and incest. Soon after, the band released “Surfer Rosa,” their first full-length album, in 1988. The album gained critical acclaim in Europe and was given the title of the “Album of the Year” by Sounds and Melody Makers. In 2005, the album was certified Gold. After releasing the album “Doolittle,” Deal was fired and the band went on their Fuck or Fight Tour acros the U.S. Following the night of the end-of-tour party, the band went on a hiatus, which ended in 1990 when the remaining band members moved to Los Angeles and released “Bossanova”, followed by a tour. The tour continued until 1991, when band released their fifth studio album, “Trompe le Monde.”
With their distinctive music style, containing a number of elements including, noise rock, indie rock psychedelic and surf rock, Pixies found immense fame. The band managed to get huge number of fans with the help of their unique song lyrics, which largely dealt with subjects such as surrealism, biblical violence, incest, extraterrestrials etc. The boom of the alternative rock in 1990s owes much to Pixies, whose significant influence on this particular genre cannot be denied. After silence, in 2013, the band unexpectedly came up to the surface with their brand new single “Bagboy” and released EP1 in September, 2013. EP2 is the band’s most recent release, which came out in January, 2014.
