Old Crow Medicine Show
Old Crow Medicine Show was formed by Ketch Secor and Chris Critter Fuqua, who met in an early age while they were in seventh grade in Harrisonburg, Virginia. They used to perform at a local diner called Little Girl on open mic. It was their first experience to perform on stage, and the audience believed they had talent. After some time Secor constituted a formal band named Route 11 Boys, and took up music as a profession. By the time he graduated from Ithaca College, he had already met many people who used to think like he did, and had learnt to play Banjo. Secor, with his friends, recorded and produced an album of 10 songs after gathering in Critter’s bedroom in 1998, and named it as Trans:mission. They believe that the atmosphere at and around New York especially at Ithaca is very congenial and encouraging for Old Time music.
There was a day when this newly formed band was performing outside a pharmacy named Boone Drug at Boone, North Carolina. Fortunately by chance, there happened to pass by the daughter of Doc Watson who was a renowned folk-country singer. She heard them for some time and realized that they sang really well. It was through her that the news about their talent reached Doc Watson, who invited them to sing at Wilkesboro, North Carolina at an annual music festival called MerleFest. There performance at this level led them to have a kick start for their singing career, and they relocated to Nashville, where they were welcomed by Marty Stuart, who was at that time the President of Grand Ole Opry which is a company that arranges weekly musical stage performances featuring renowned singers. Other people who had a great contribution towards this band’s success and settlement at their new station include Gillian Welch and David Rawlings. The band received a standing ovation at their first performance at Grand Ole Opry as they performed at Ryman Auditorium in 2001.
Ever since, the band has performed in many of the great musical shows and festivals. Some of them include the New Orleans Jazz Festival, Bonnaroo, Coachella, All Good Music Festival, Telluride Bluegrass Festival, Rock the Snowys and Country Music Channel. They have also toured extensively and performed in many countries. Prominent foreign performances include one at BBC show Later with Jools Holland and at Cambridge Folk Festival. They have been an important part of Grand Ole Opry and Prairie Home Companion Cinecast. They also performed at the New Year’s Eve 2010 at Ryman Auditorium, Nashville. Among the many awards and nominations the band received, major ones include Americana Music Award for Best Duo or Group and Top 10 Bluegrass Albums of the Year for their album O.C.M.S. in 2004 by Country Music Television.
The singing style for the band has always been unique and highly appreciated by the fans across the globe. Prominent genres that the band has performed in include Bluegrass, Country, Folk Blues, Old time, and Memphis blues. The lead guitarist of Old Crow Medicine Show, Kevin Paul Hayes started playing Guit-Jo after playing guitar for more than three years professionally. He claims that he is perhaps the only professional guit-jo player in America. Singing since 1998 and singing so well, this band has an unmatched talent as already acknowledged by so many of critics.
