Neutral Milk Hotel
Formed by Jeff Mangum, the band is famous for its sound, lyrics and diverse instrumentation. Before the band was formed, the first release under its name was an EP, Everything Is, which featured tracks by Mangum alone. Following its release, the band’s first full-length album On Avery Island hit the shelves in 1996. The album received positive reviews from the audiences and critics where AllMusic gave it four stars. NME praised the band’s debut album by saying “On Avery Island sums up just why, in a perfect world, they would have been the band of the ‘90s” and gave it a 9/10. The album featured famous songs like “Naomi” and “Someone Is Waiting.” Following the release of On Avery Island, the band hit the road to tour across the globe.
After the success of its debut album, Neutral Milk Hotel released its second record, In the Aeroplane Over the Sea in 1998. The album received remarkable commercial success as soon as it hit the shelves. Shortly after its release, it sold around 300, 000 copies, receiving immense popularity and positive critical reviews. It became the band’s best-known album, which was praised by prominent publications including AllMusic, Pitchfork Media and Magnet Magazine. It received all this praise and critical acclaim because of the provocative lyrics and the epic instrumentation. The album took its inspiration from one of the victims of Holocaust, the famous Anne Frank. Some of the hit tracks from the album include “Oh Sister”, “In the Aeroplane over the Sea” and “Engine”.
Although, the band received fame and success by the two releases, it went on hiatus following the release of its second album. However, before doing so, a couple of notable performances were given, including the one on Bilheimer’s birthday in Athens. After being away from the industry for over a decade, the band reunited last year and kick started its tour earlier this year. Although, it was on a hiatus, some of the team members did make occasional appearances, which include Mangum’s contribution to the song “I Have Been Floated” to Olivia Tremor Control’s album Black Foliage. Apart from this, the singer and guitarist has also been engaged in making a couple of appearances with Elf Power.
And after years of disappearance as a band, it returned to entertain the fans with its In the Aeroplane over the Sea lineup. The band has influenced several other music groups including Bon Iver, The Decemberists and Bright Eyes. Furthermore, it had the honor of being the lead character’s favorite band in John Green’s novel “Will Grayson.”
Having received so much prominence and fame, the members have reunited and are currently touring across the US to perform before their die-hard fans.
