Mariah Carey has been called “Songbird Supreme” by the Guinness World Records as she is among the best-selling female artists of all time. She is at the number 3 spot on the Recording Industry Association of America’s list of the best-selling female artists in the US. Her career spans over almost three decades and during this time she has won 5 Grammy Awards, 11 American Music Awards and an astonishing 32 Billboard Music Awards.
A gifted child
Mariah Carey was born in Huntington, New York. Her mother Patricia was a trained opera singer and a vocal coach. Carey received her initial training from her mother but Patricia never pushed her to take up classical opera as a profession. Carey focused on genres like pop, soul and R&B. While in high school, she started writing poems and songs. She had already started to excel in music by that time. While still in school she received some training from popular R&B singer and record producer Gavin Christopher. She recorded her demo tape and sent it to a number of recording labels but failed to get their attention.
The big breakthrough
Mariah Carey became friends with Brenda Starr and it was she who introduced Carey to the head of Columbia Records. The people at the label were so impressed by her talents that they offered her a contract shortly afterwards. Her self-titled debut album came out in June 1990. It turned out to be a massive hit and sold around 9 million copies in the US alone. It went multiple-platinum in Canada, Japan and New Zealand as well. Carey followed that up by coming out with Emotions. Released in 1991, the album went platinum in various countries and sold 8 million copies worldwide to put Carey among the most famous names in music.
String of hit albums
Mariah Carey has released thirteen studio, three greatest hits and three compilation albums. Her first seven albums were certified multiple-platinum in the US. Mariah Carey, Emotions, Music Box, Merry Christmas, Day Dream, Butterfly, Rainbow and The Emancipation of Mimi are her bestselling albums. Daydream went diamond in the US selling over 7 million copies and sold in excess of an incredible 25 million copies across the globe. Her latest album Me I Am Mariah…The Elusive Chanteuse came out in May 2014. It landed at number 8, 5 and 3 spots on the Canadian, Australian and the US Billboard charts respectively.
A long list of accolades
Mariah Carey is among a special group of singers to have a five-octave vocal range. She is the only solo artist in the US to have 18 number-one singles to her name. She is ranked at number 2 on the VH1 list of the “100 Greatest Women in Music.” Her collective album sales have crossed the 200 million mark placing her among the bestselling music artists of all time.
She has won five Grammy Awards in categories such as the “Best New Artist,” the “Best Female Pop Vocal Performance,” the “Best New Artist,” the “Best Contemporary R&B Album” and the “Best R&B Song.” She is also a recipient of a legend award from the World Music Awards for being the “best-selling female pop artist of the millennium.” Her track “All I Want for Christmas” is the only holiday song and ringtone that earned a multiple-platinum status in the US.
