The forthcoming event brings two bands Journey & Steve Miller Band together at one venue. Journey is a San Francisco based rock ensemble that was formed in 1973. Founded by Herbie Herbert, the former Santana manager, the original lineup of Journey had lead vocalist and keyboardist, Gregg Rolie, drummer Prairie Prince from “the Tubes”, rhythm guitarist George Tickner, bassist Ross Valory and lead guitarist, Neal Schon. The band was initially named “the Golden Gate Rhythm Section” and was formed with the aim of performing as a backup band for artists from the Bay Area. As the talented lot started jamming and composing songs, they decided to reestablish themselves as a leading band. Taking on a jazz fusion style, the group changed its named to Journey as suggested by John Villaneuva. They made its debut appearance on New Year’s Eve of 1973. In the following year, Journey hired Aynsley Dunbar, former drummer of Frank Zappa and John Lennon to replace Prairie Prince. With this the new lineup the jazz ensemble performed at the Great American Music Hall. Soon after this performance Journey was approached by Columbia Records for a contract.
The first three studio albums by Journey were not very big hits so Columbia Records advised the members to alter their style. Signing on Steve Perry as the lead vocalist in 1977, Journey’s fourth studio album “Infinity” went viral. Receiving Platinum certification, the band produced hit singles, “Wheel in the Sky” and “Lights.” Throughout its career, Journey has released 14 studio albums, 8 of which have landed in the top 20 of the Billboard 200. With 8 multi-Platinum records, 2 Gold albums s and a diamond record, Journey has sold eighty million album copies. The band is ranked amongst some of the best-selling American rock ensembles.
At the forthcoming event, Journey will perform live alongside the Steve Miller Band, a 60s rock ensemble that has been performing for four decades. The Steve Miller Band is also a San Francisco based band. It was founded by singer and musician, Steve Miller. The group came into existence after he relocated to Chicago in 1965. Before forming the group, Steve Miller became a part of an Epic Records band, “Goldberg-Miller Blues Band” performing with musicians like Barry Goldberg, Shawn Yoder, Craymore Stevens and Lance Haas. Moving to San Francisco, Steve decided to leave the band and form the Steve Miller Blues Band. Signing with Capitol Records in 1967, the initial lineup consisted of James Cooke on guitars, Lonnie Turner on bass, Tim Davis on drums, Jim Peterman playing the Hammond B3 organ and Steve Miller as the vocalist. Their debut record titled “Children of the Future” released in 1968. The band’s sophomore release named “Sailor” reached number 24 on the Billboard 200. Since then, the group has released eighteen studio releases, seven compilation records and three live albums out of which ten have been able to land amongst the top 20 albums on the Billboard 200.
